That looks like some Chinese knockoff there.

That seems like a pretty good result, to me. Minimal intrusion into the passenger cabin, most of the area around the driver stayed intact. Side airbags would have helped a lot. The 1/3 offset or whatever isn’t a test that cars were designed for up until recently (and really is only applicable to hitting a guardrail)

I thought the Soul did well in the IIHS tests?
Regardless, I think it did pretty well considering this is a tough test. My sister has totaled two Souls in front end collisions. She walked away both times with nothing more than a little bruising from the seat belt. That’s reason enough for me to say I think the Soul is a pretty safe car.

The side view makes the accident seem much worse than in the overhead view. An airbag in the A-pillar probably would have helped here.
Years ago I totalled my VW Vanagon, a loss of about $10,000, and actually drove away from the accident. OK, the whole body was distorted to the point where the windshield popped out, but I still drove away. No intrusion into the passenger compartment but wrinkles down the side. People think of that car as a deathtrap since you’re sitting out in front of the front wheels, but in my personal experience it did amazingly well in that dreaded frontal offset crash scenario, looooooong before today’s more stringent safety requirements.

Your car isn’t trying to kill you. It’s just not trying too hard to prevent you from doing it yourself. Or others doing it for you...

Looks like it did pretty well everywhere but the small overlap test, and they eventually fixed that:
Here’s the 2015 video:

Small car + not made for the small-overlap crash = scary!

Could be worse, I rode in this car in Russia.

I’m sure the sedan is much safer though...

And if you hit a guard rail, it may decide to intrude into the cabin anyways.
